Solving Problems with Others
Problems with friends and family are inevitable in life. During this unit, we try to teach children the tools they need to solve these conflicts in healthy ways. First, we cover the difference between aggressive, assertive, and passive communication. Then we go through each of the four steps to problem solving.
1) Ask Questions and Listen
-Here we practice asking good questions when you feel there is a conflict and listening for the answers. This often stops fights before they start!
2) Tell How You Feel
-Using I Messages is the easiest and most effective way for students to do this. The template we teach is "I feel ____ when ____. I need/want ___."
3) Brainstorm Ideas
-Talk with your friend about what could solve the problem, and the positives and negatives of each.
4) Choose a Solution
-Pick a solution everyone can agree on!
