Conflict Resolution
Problems with friends and family are inevitable in life. During this unit, we try to teach children the tools they need to solve these conflicts in healthy ways. First, we cover the difference between aggressive, assertive, and passive communication. Then, we spend a LOT of time covering all of the aspects of solving conflicts. Some of the main points can be found below!
The Four Steps to Problem Solving
1) Get the Facts- This addresses asking good questions and listening to the answers
2) Anger Management - What do YOU need to do to calm down? Stay in control so you can solve the problem. If you can't stay calm, wait until
later to work it out! Any choice you make needs to follow The Anger Rules as well (Do not hurt yourself, others, or property).
3) Good Communication - Tell how you feel. Use and I Message (I feel ____ when ____. I need/want ____.) Be a good listener and pay attention to
how your friend is feeling too.
4) Use Tools to Solve Problems - Brainstorm what you believe will solve the problem. Some of the options include: postpone, avoid, ignore,
negotiate, compromise, share, take turns, talk it out, apologize, get help from an adult, and more.
