2nd Grade Guidance - Feelings Exploration & Anger Management
We will spend the first 2 weeks of this unit learning new feeling words and classifying them as "sweet" and "sour." I prefer we use these terms with our students rather than "good" and "bad" to prevent them from feeling that some feelings are "bad" and therefore we shouldn't have them. Rather, I want them to adapt the idea that "All of our feelings are ok, it's what you do with them that counts." We also will be spending some time doing charades and having children share how and why they are having certain feelings with the class. This is a great activity because it shows them that talking about feelings is healthy and normal!
We will spend the last 3 weeks of the unit learning more about anger. Through a short video, we will examine triggers and coping techniques to help students learn positive reactions to this powerful feeling. Then, we'll spend an extensive amount of time practicing healthy coping skills such as deep breathing, resting, reading, scribbling, building, and more! A small book will come home to help you follow through with your child!
