The Secrets to Friendship
Through a variety of experiential activities, students will learn and practice the skills it takes to make and keep friends.
Secret #1 - Use Butterfly Words
As you can guess, butterfly words draw people in and make them want to be around you. Their opposite, "Bumblebee Words" chase others away.
Secret #2 - Share & Take Turns
We made some beautiful Rainbow Fish, using only a little piece of glitter paper and finding ways to distribute it fairly amongst all students. We even managed to use one pair of scissors and one glue stick between four people! It was beautiful!
Secret #3 - Play Fair
Students are working hard to play by the rules, wait patiently for their turn, quietly and respectfully solve differences, and touch only their pawn. I will model kind language in addition to the above skills so children know exactly what it looks like before sending them off to try it on their own.
Secret #4 - Use Nice Manners
We will spend time talking about basic manners such as: Please, thank you, holding open doors, responding to greetings from others, waiting patiently, and so on. First grade will culminate this unit with a REAL Tea Party! Look for invitations with times and dates to come home with your child.
